Meet The Skunk

Skunks are actually an interesting animal, can be fun to watch, and behave similar to cats. We consider them cats that can stink when they want to, but officially they are part of the Mephitidae family.

Our company started out with the name The Skunk Whisperer because our clients liked the humane and entertaining ways we interacted with skunks. We still love skunks, and only changed our company's name to The Wildlife Whisperer because we wanted to make sure everyone knew we could work with more than just skunks.

It's true, skunks can be interesting and fun to observe, but there are several reasons you want to keep them off your property.

Why You Don't Want Skunks Around

Skunks can carry rabies and be destructive to lawn and home. In addition, their pheromones, feces and urine can attract other wildlife critters to your property, and the problems that come with them - now and later. We can help you humanely remove skunks and eliminate the smells that they may leave behind that can attract other wildlife to the area.

Skunks are nocturnal, if you see one during daylight hours when they were not flushed out by rain, another animal or unusual circumstances, it is safest to assume they are rabid or have distemper.

Take necessary precautions and call your wildlife professional immediately. If you're in Southwest Florida, please call us for help.

Signs Of Skunks

Skunks may be less visible during the colder months. They do not officially hibernate, but they do become “slow” or dormant for approximately a month during the coldest part of the winter. Skunks may even den with other skunks or another animal of a different species. It is not uncommon for different skunk families to den together.

Feces are one of the things to look for with respect to the presence of skuks. Skunk feces will generally be 1-2 inches long, and ¼" to ½" inch in diameter - but this always depends what they are currently eating.

Tracks are another thing to look for as a sign of skunks around your property. Skunks typically have visible claw marks in their tracks. They do have five toes on all feet, but four are typically seen in tracks, and their heels are not usually seen in tracks.

Keeping Skunks Away

Skunks can quickly become a nuisance when digging holes in the lawn and flower beds. If the only thing they are doing is digging for grubs and tearing up your lawn, our skunk repellent may be all you need.

If you kill all the grubs in the soil, it won't stop the problem because the skunks will still look for them and continue to tear up your flower beds and landscaping, as evidenced in the photo below.

So, killing the grubs won't work, but our skunk repellent will. It makes the dirt taste worse than dirt, and they lose interest.

When it comes to skunk control, exclusion via physical barriers is the best method, but if installing a fence or letting us wildlife proof your existing fence is not in your near future, our natural, non-toxic skunk repellent will likely be less expensive than trapping and relocating them all.

Breeding Season

Regarding removal, the skunk breeding season can create an urgent situation. February marks the start of the adult skunk breeding season. March and April is breeding season for yearling females. With a gestation period of 7-10 weeks, adults have their young during the first part of May, and yearlings during the first part of June. Typically, they only have one litter a year, with between 1-15 young. The average / most common litter will be between 4 to 6 kittens. The skunk babies, or young, are called kittens, sometimes "kits" for short.

Kits stay with their mothers until fall. Ideally you will want to eliminate your skunk problem before the kittens are born. The typical home range of a skunk is ½ mile to 2 miles, but a male may travel up to five miles every night during breeding season.

Removal, Clean Up And Damage Repair

Skunks can do a lot of damage, and leave some pretty bad smells behind too. We can help you with all your skunk removal needs, do the necessary follow up repairs, eliminate the odor, and make modifications to your property to keep the skunks away for good.
